Apple Crunch Collection

Compressed game files with FPBASIC fit more games to a disk and allow them to be more easily launched. Unless specified, all games are believed to require an Apple ][+ or later and 48K RAM. Current revision replaces the broken former inclusion "Frazzle" with "Battlezone", and "Blitzkrieg" has been moved from disk 1 to disk 2. Note that it is possible, in a future revision, for further changes, as bugs are discovered and fixed.

The complete collection (except Defender (Joe Holt) and Vopper) on DOS 3.3 disk images for ease of transfer.

ProDOS Filecracks

For those who keep their software on disks with more than 140K storage capacity, it is useful to have versions of games which will load from their high capacity media. As DOS 3.3 is incapable, even with replacements to the disk read code, of handling drives with more than 400K capacity, this usually means ProDOS, which can handle up to 32 MB per drive.

Many of these programs will not run if launched from the root of a disk using BASIC.SYSTEM. There is a workaround, involving two lines which must be entered first before running the program.

Otherwise, the program will bomb with an error like "HELLO ERR CODE @".

In Loader Types A and A+, error messages are terse to save memory. They will usually report a message like "ERR CODE X" where X is a symbol or letter representing the ProDOS error code. (For example, @ = invalid path, F = file not found) They also use "T" to render "file type mismatch" errors. Loader Types B and B+ are larger and offer a selection of error messages up to 16 characters long, with hexadecimal output for other types of error.

Several variants of Concentration. Recracked from the commonly available Reset Vector version. Uses the same game files (patching is done on the fly by the loader). Added Exit to ProDOS option (press Ctrl-Reset). No longer runs on 48K machines. Still needs an Apple ][+ or later.

The ProDOS image contains the Selextra patch to add BIN support to the Selector.

Classic arcade game. As with the disk, gameplay is somewhat slow due to the 1 MHz processor and constant bankswitching required to draw the colorful graphics.

The 4-file version is the original crack. It cannot be loaded from BASIC.SYSTEM or Selextra, so I created an alternate version which works around these issues.

Rocky's Boots
Classic Boolean logic puzzle game co-developed by Warren Robinett, he of Atari Adventure (to which this was originally intended as a sequel). This version has the splash screen and menu design of a later version and the game engine of the original version. (It barely fits; ProDOS 1.9 and later will not fit alongside it.)

The initial loader which is invoked by ProDOS is compressed. The menu system has been gutted and rewritten from scratch.

Donkey Kong
Mario's debut! This is one of the most complete ports of Donkey Kong on any platform, containing all 4 original levels and most of the animations (it doesn't have the first cutscene). A direct port of the original disk with no additional compression, similar to the Pick-A-Dilly Pair hack.

The original disk image was created with ProDOS 1.8, but was replaced with 1.1 to save some disk space, part of which was used by the BASIC loader wedge.

Knights on flying ostriches? Alright, but I want some of that stuff the creators at Williams were smoking.

The "scrunch" technique used on Donkey Kong, the "exomize" technique used on Apple Crunch, and the program is packed nice and tight in 3 files.

This version contains the full title screen. Despite using the same crack as Apple Crunch, this version, unlike the crunched version, does have sound. I believe some necessary code or data used to implement this is located in the title screen code.

A collection of patches to DOS 3.3, mostly by others and some by myself. Includes a speed improvement and takes less space on disk than standard DOS 3.3, or even ProntoDOS and ESDOS. Also includes a "disk space free" patch, and ProntoDOS's TYPE command in place of VERIFY.

Where possible, I intend to use this kernel for all purposes requiring a standard or near-standard DOS 3.3.

A pair of patches to ProDOS-8. The first is a modified Selector which is able to load and run BIN files as well as SYS files (although extremely large SYS files like the original QIX.SYSTEM will not work). The second is a hack (also documented and available for versions 1.0.1 through 1.9) that provides the version 2.0.3 behavior of exiting to the Selector if no .SYSTEM file is found, rather than hanging. An extra utility, CAT, is included to allow for listing files in the same directory, making the Selector a little more useful.

This is a boot disk only.

Patches of several versions of ProDOS-8 to exit directly to the Selector instead of hanging if there is no .SYSTEM file on the disk. This makes 1.9 functionally equivalent in most respects to 2.0.3 apart from the latter's requirement of a 65C02 (and relaxed drive count limit). It may also make 1.0.1 through 1.8 more useful. (It did not work on versions of 1.0 with the Selector, and is obviously useless on versions without.)

Versions included with the patch are 1.0.1, 1.0.2, 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8 and 1.9.

This is a non-boot disk. Copy your version of choice to another disk and rename it to PRODOS.
